THE OPPORTUNITY

We’re looking for a highly motivated Associate Lawyer (1-5 years’ call) to build a successful practice as a solicitor specializing in Indigenous governance law. In this role, you’ll work directly with clients by supporting them on their paths to self-governance, justice, and community development. You will work on complex, high-impact files, and play a key role in the development of Indigenous laws and governance frameworks.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strong legal advice and strategic recommendations
  • Draft Indigenous laws, policies, governance codes, agreements, and legal opinions
  • Conduct complex legal research and synthesize findings clearly and practically
  • Work directly with Indigenous governments, Boards, and senior administrators
  • Support Nations in exercising jurisdiction in areas such as governance, lands, and child and family services
  • Engage with community members, leadership, and other governments to strengthen self-governance and promote self-determination
  • Negotiate government-to-government agreements and facilitate access to federal funding resources for clients
  • Manage files independently while collaborating closely with senior counsel
  • Meet clear productivity expectations and billing targets
  • Travel to client communities, including remote locations, when required
  • Other office duties as required in a small firm

 REQUIREMENTS

Our ideal candidate is a dedicated, collaborative, self-motivated, enthusiastic, hard worker with excellent communication, problem solving, and inter-personal skills. This individual will have:

  • 1-5 years of legal experience
    • Experience in Indigenous law, governance, or related areas would be an asset
  • LLB or JD from an accredited law school
  • Must be a member in good standing (or eligible for membership) with the Law Society of BC and a willingness to be called in other jurisdictions, if required
  • Sound legal judgment, advocacy and client relationship skills
  • Excellent communication skills with a positive team attitude and strong work ethic
  • Ability to work well under pressure, both independently and as part of the team
  • Proficiency in MS365 and Adobe Acrobat
  • Experience with Unity Accounting (EsiLaw) is an asset

 COMPENSATION & EXPECTATIONS

  • Salary: $100,250–$136,750
  • Performance-based bonus tied to productivity
