People & Operations Manager

BBU Law is a boutique law firm situated in downtown Vancouver.  We represent clients on a broad spectrum of legal issues, primarily litigation and dispute resolution, with an emphasis on strata property law.  As we continue to grow, we are seeking a proactive People & Operations Manager to support our firm operations.  The ideal candidate will bring experience from a law firm environment, a proven ability to lead and a passion for people and workplace culture.

This individual will play a key role in supporting day-to-day human resources functions while working closely with the accounting role to ensure alignment between HR processes and firm operations. This is a newly created position and is an excellent opportunity for an HR professional looking to develop their career and grow within.

This is a full-time, in-office position at our Vancouver office, with the possibility of flexible work arrangements in the future.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Manage staff recruitment and selection process, including job postings, candidate screening, interviews, and onboarding.
  • Assist in articled student and lawyer recruitment and onboarding.

Administration & Compliance

  • Develop and implement workplace policies and procedures.
  • Administer payroll and benefits programs.
  • Maintain accurate HR records (including attendance, performance, and compensation) and generate reports for management.
  • Collaborate with accounting on budget, headcount planning, reporting and invoicing
  • Manage work from home requests.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and company policies.
  • Coordinate and schedule administrative support, taking into account lawyer needs and staff availability.

Employee Relations & Development

  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, ensuring employees are supported and engaged.
  • Address employee complaints, conflicts, and concerns.
  • Coach staff and carry out performance and compensation reviews.
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver staff and associate development programs.
  • Oversee and coordinate staff events.

Qualifications

  • College diploma or bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management or a related field (minimum requirement).
  • CHRP designation is an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years proven experience as a human resources manager or in a similar leadership role, preferably within a law firm or professional services firm.
  • Familiarity with the legal profession and the unique challenges faced by law firms.
  • In-depth knowledge of human resources management, best practices and relevant employment legislation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
