About the Role

We are looking for a Legal Administrative Assistant – Family Law Litigation to join our team and provide organized, thoughtful, and detail-oriented support to our family law practice.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys being part of a busy litigation practice, wants to develop their skills, and values working with a supportive and collegial team. You will work closely with experienced family lawyers and legal professionals and gain exposure to a wide range of family law matters, including separation and divorce, parenting arrangements, child and spousal support, property division, and protection matters.

The successful candidate will be organized, dependable, comfortable managing competing priorities, and able to communicate with clients professionally and compassionately during what can be a difficult time in their lives.

Key Responsibilities

Family Law Document Preparation & File Management

  • Assist with drafting, preparing, and formatting family law documents such as Notices of Family Claim / Responses, F8 Financial Statements, affidavits, separation agreements, parenting plans, consent orders, trial briefs and hearing binders.
  • File documents with BC Provincial Court, BC Supreme Court.
  • Assist with tracking deadlines, court dates, and lawyer calendars.
  • Maintain well-organized electronic and physical files, with careful attention to accuracy and confidentiality.

Client Communication & Support

  • Communicate professionally and empathetically with clients.
  • Schedule client meetings, mediations, case conferences, and court appearances.
  • Coordinate service of documents and liaise with process servers, mediators, and other professionals involved in family matters. 

Case & Practice Support

  • Assist with preparation for trials, hearings, conferences, discoveries, and mediations.
  • Organize disclosure and document production in accordance with court rules.
  • Conduct basic research and registry searches.
  • Assist with time entry, billing, and monthly invoicing.
  • Work collaboratively with lawyers and other members of the administrative team to keep files moving efficiently.

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Experience

  • Legal Administrative Assistant diploma or equivalent training is an asset.
  • Previous experience in a law firm is preferred; family law experience is an asset but not necessarily required for a strong candidate
  • Familiarity with Provincial and Supreme Court family law rules and court procedures is an asset.
  • We welcome candidates who are early in their careers and interested in developing strong family law and litigation skills.

Technical Skills

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook, and comfort using Excel.
  • Experience with practice-management or family-law software such as Clio, DivorceMate, LEAP, or similar programs is an asset.
  • Familiarity with court e-filing systems is an asset.
  • Strong document-formatting, proofreading, and file-management skills.
