We are currently recruiting for a Privacy Paralegal.The Privacy Paralegal works with the Privacy Lead, providing support for a range of privacy related matters, including FOI request responses, proceedings before the OIPC, drafting and legal research. The Privacy Paralegal will also provide legal admin support to the Privacy Lead and the privacy practice group. The Privacy Paralegal has exceptional attention to detail and strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prioritize work and meet competing deadlines. They have subject matter expertise in the area of privacy law, and in particular demonstrated ability to effectively and independently manage FOI request responses.

This is a permanent and full-time position, hours will be Monday through Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm. Responsibilities:

  • Manage the FOI request responses, from intake to to disclosure and assessment of appropriate redactions
  • Interpret provincial and federal privacy legislation, including FIPPA, PIPA, and PIPEDA
  • Research and summarize privacy case law including OIPC decisions
  • Liaise with OIPC as necessary, including coordinating submissions, inquiries, and seeking guidance
  • Assist in the preparation of privacy-related documentation, including privacy impact assessments (PIAs), information sharing agreements, and data-mapping projects
  • Assist in preparation of privacy related policies and privacy management programs
  • Act as point of contact for internal teams and clients with respect to privacy inquiries, and independently manage files relating to FOI requests
  • Support internal and external privacy-related training as needed

General Assistance to Privacy Lead:

  • Create and maintain a BF system
  • Calendar management
  • Pro-active approach to file management
  • Maintain all client files in accordance with firm’s best practices as well as privacy best practices
  • Draft legal documents with the direction of Privacy Lead in all aspects of workplace law
  • Perform administrative functions in connection with file opening, closing, audit responses, time entry review and posting and bill review for Privacy Lead

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2-4 years of experience in a paralegal role
  • Demonstrated interest in privacy law as well as labour and employment
  • Paralegal degree/certificate from an accredited institution
  • Additional certifications in privacy law (e.g., CIPP/C) are an asset
  • Strong understanding of Privacy legislation
  • Well-developed analytical, problem-solving and organization skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to translate complex privacy and regulatory standards into material that can be understood by diverse audiences
  • Strong ability to maintain confidentiality; possesses diplomacy and tact
  • Able to deliver accurate and complete work product by; organizing and prioritizing workload and meeting multiple coinciding deadlines
  • Able to understand and follow written and oral directions
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relations with others

Required Technical Skills (including but not limited to):

  • Expert level proficiency with Adobe Professional
  • Advanced usage and knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook, One Drive)
  • Experience working with a document management system
  • Strong IT knowledge and understanding as it relates to privacy
  • Ability to learn various computer programs quickly
