  • Small Firms Subsection Meeting: Marijuana in the Workplace - Cutting Through the Haze

    Date: January 24, 2019

    Cost: $50.50 - $55.50

    Location: The Four Seasons Hotel

    Overview:

Happy New Year To All of You!

The Small Firms Subsection would like to invite you to attend our first meeting of 2019 – on Thursday, January 24, 2019, which will touch upon a subject that has become very important to us lately:  “Marijuana in the Workplace – Cutting Through the Haze”.

What does marijuana legalization mean for your business?  Our guest speaker, Steven Boorne, an associate lawyer at HHBG Employment Lawyers in Vancouver, will provide an overview of the law covering everything from the differences between recreational and medical marijuana use to its implications on employee attendance, productivity, and health and safety.

Did you know that marijuana can impair brain function for as long as 28 days? And what is a business to do when marijuana impairment can’t be tested? Walk away with a clearer understanding of what your legal obligations are as an employer.

Steven is frequently called on to advise on issues related to cannabis in the workplace.  He advises on policy development, disciplinary issues and accommodation for medical cannabis users.

Originally admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1994, Steven moved to BC and has been practicing here since 2007.  He specializes in administrative law and his practice focuses on professional regulation, employment, labour and human rights issues.  He works with professional regulatory bodies, public and private sector employers, unions and individuals.

Steven is an experienced prosecutor in professional disciplinary matters for police departments and professional regulatory bodies.  He also advises investigators, defends professionals facing misconduct allegations and acts as legal counsel to discipline tribunals.

We are excited to hear from Steven, a new presenter to the BCLMA and look forward to you joining us.

Please reserve your tickets by January 18, 2019.

  • “Is Your Perception My Reality? Exploring Unconscious Bias"

    Date: February 20, 2019

    Cost: $95.00 - $115.00

    Location: Terminal City Club

    Overview:

    Is Your Perception My Reality

Until recently, a commonly held understanding was that only “bad” people are prejudiced so many of our diversity efforts focused on identifying these individuals and changing their beliefs. However, evidence from Harvard University, among others, now reveals that we all inadvertently make assumptions and decisions that impact some groups more adversely than others. It is thus important for leaders to be aware of unconsciously held beliefs and how these biases might impact their decision making on a day to day basis. During this interactive workshop, we will:

    • Discuss the importance of Diversity and Inclusion and our shared accountability in advancing D&I
    • Understand and describe Unconscious Bias
    • Develop an internal awareness of how unconscious bias is created * (System 1 and System 2 thinking)
    • Discuss the impact of Bias at within organizations
    • Discuss concrete opportunities to minimize bias
