  • Small Firms Subsection - How Administrators Can Deal With Stress More Effectively

    Date: March 28, 2019

    Cost: $50.50

    Location: The Four Seasons Hotel

    Overview:

Co-chairs, Rubyna Jinnah and Ronda Smyth, cordially invite you all to attend the next Small Firms Subsection Meeting to be held on Thursday, March 28, 2019, where we will be joined by Heather Gray-Grant for an interesting and very relevant presentation about “How Administrators Can Deal With Stress More Effectively”.

Law firm administrators are expected to be experts in multiple areas, work long hours, manage challenging personalities and constantly juggle priorities.  It’s no wonder administrators feel stressed for extended periods of time.  You may not be able to change the role, but you can definitely take steps to help get that stress more under control.

Our presenter, Heather Gray-Grant, is a seasoned presenter to the BCLMA and has been supporting law firms, lawyers and administrators to strive to become the best versions of themselves.  As a consultant, she has assisted small to medium sized law firms throughout BC with strategic planning, development and implementation of operational and marketing plans, and providing coaching for law firm leaders and lawyers.  She has also facilitated retreats and served as a keynote presenter in BC, nationally and throughout the USA.  She has been widely published, including as a regular contributor to SLAW, Canada’s online legal magazine.

Heather is also a trained mediator and negotiator through the Justice Institute of BC, and is certified for coaching through the International Coaching Federation.

Please register by Friday, March 22, 2019.

    More About Procertas from Procertas:

Casey Flaherty and Procertas will convince you that legal professionals make poor use of the technology tools already at their disposal. He will also explain why this matters, especially in the context of recent structural changes to the legal market.

Casey is a former inside counsel, outside counsel, and legal operations consultant. Casey’s current day job involves helping a global law firm align around its clients’ needs. Casey’s passion project is Procertas (an abbreviation of Professional Certifications), which provides a first-of-its-kind, competency-based learning platform focused on the core technology tools (Word, Excel, PDF) of the legal profession.

Casey has partnered with Joe Colucci, who has 15+ years selling and consulting into the legal technology market, to bring the Legal Technology Assessment (LTA) into the Legal Market.  Thru leveraging relationships at the law firm, in house counsel, law school and state bar association markets, Joe has helped spike adoption at a fastidious level.

Remember, people “don’t know what they don’t know, and the “Myth of the Digital Native” is REAL!  The LTA is an application that can solidly prove these statements.

  • Revisiting the W-8 Forms (Finance Subsection)

    Date: May 16, 2019

    Cost: $0.00

    Location: Terminal City Club

    Overview:

    Guest Speaker: Thomas Ciz

Thomas Ciz, a lawyer and CPA, has worked in the practice of law with a focus on taxation. In that capacity, he has covered tax issues related to: income tax, commodity tax matters involving individuals, trust, corporations, partnerships, registered charities, non-profit organizations, and First Nations.

    Revisiting the W-8 Forms

At last year’s eye-opening presentation on the topic of foreign withholding taxes and the implications for Canadian lawyers, Mr. Ciz spoke on the topic of tax treaties that Canada has with other countries, including the United States, and some of the withholding tax requirements. He untangled the complicated IRS tax rules, explained which forms needed to be used in each situation, and provided step-by-step instructions to complete the correct forms.

This year Mr. Ciz will focus on the U.S. tax rules and  related forms. For those who missed last  year’s event, this session will provide an in-depth review of the U.S. tax withholding rules and reporting requirements.

    Please note, seating is limited.
