  • Does your firm’s network security measure up?

    Date: October 24, 2018

    Cost: $0.00

    Location: Harper Grey LLP

    Overview:

Does your firm’s network security measure up?  Ten affordable security best practices that your law firm should implement immediately.

The legal industry is seeing an unprecedented increase in incidents of viruses and data breaches.  The most common threat is ransomware, which encrypts all files on the network, and can cause email servers to shut down.  Small and mid-size law firms have long emphasized convenience and productivity over security, but these threats are causing firms to re-think their approach to security.

Brian Mauch is the founder and CEO of BMC Networks, a Vancouver-based outsourced IT provider that specializes in law firms.  Brian will be outlining ten security measures and best practices which are within the budgets of small and mid-size firms.  BMC will be providing lunch for this event.

This event will be hosted at:

    Harper Grey LLP
    3200 – 650 West Georgia Street
    16th Floor Boardroom
    Vancouver BC V6B 4P

  • Small Firms - Round Table - October 25, 2018

    Date: October 25, 2018

    Cost: $22.00

    Location: HHBG Lawyers

    Overview:

    Hi Everyone,

Ronda Smyth and I are very excited about the upcoming year.  We have already begun to brainstorm about interesting topics and speakers for 2019, that we think will be of interest and good value to our Subsection’s membership.

To that end, we would like to invite you to attend our Small Firms Subsection Round Table on Thursday, October 25, 2018.  We will hold the session at HHBG Lawyers, located at #1918 – 1030 W. Georgia Street, Vancouver.

PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO SPACE RESTRICTIONS, WE WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE 14 PEOPLE.  FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED.

Please note that the deadline to register is Monday, October 22, 2018, at noon.

As some of you may know, November is election month for the BCLMA.  As Ronda and I feel like we just got started in 2018 co-chairing this Subsection, we are amenable to continue to co-chair together for the 2019 term, should there be no objection.  With that said, at the next meeting, we will reaffirm this, and also look at succession planning for the next Chair/Co-Chair.  Please think about it and perhaps consider throwing your hat in to Chair for the 2020 term.

Unless there are any objections to Ronda and I continuing to hold the reins for Small Firms, we will continue our work with the BCLMA and look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on October 25, at HHBG.

Ticket price will be $22 (inclusive of $1.05 GST).  Please make your cheque payable to BCLMA.  You can either mail the cheque in advance or bring it with you to the meeting.

We’re looking forward to seeing you on October 25!

    Date: November 06, 2018

    Cost: $0.00 - $100.00

    Location: Terminal City Club

    Overview:

Announcing the Annual Managing Partners’ event

The rules of the legal marketplace are changing. Clients want their legal needs met faster and less expensively, and new providers are emerging to meet those demands. Older lawyers balk at succession plans, while younger lawyers walk away from the partnership track. There’s never been a more challenging time to be a law firm leader — nor has there ever been a time of such dynamic opportunities.

Managing partners, practice group leaders, and law firm administrators who attend this session will gain insight into:

    • the most consequential trends and developments affecting the Canadian legal market,
    • key strategies and tactics for adapting their law firms to new competitive conditions,
    • how to help senior lawyers start transitioning their practices to younger colleagues,
    • how to reduce the risk of junior lawyers leaving the law firm after just a few years,
    • how to start streamlining law firm operations and improving legal business processes, and
    • how to begin the task or reorienting the law firm business model for a new generation.

Guest Speaker : Jordan Furlong is a consultant, author, and legal market analyst who forecasts the impact of changing market conditions on lawyers and law firms. He has given dozens of presentations to audiences in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia over the past several years. Formerly an award-winning editor of three Canadian legal periodicals, Jordan is also a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management and co-directs the advisory board of Suffolk University Law School’s Institute on Legal Innovation and Technology. He is the author of Law Is A Buyer’s Market: Building a Client-First Law Firm, and he writes regularly about the changing legal market at his website, law21.ca
