Smith is a Canadian lawyer and former Olympic rower who graduated from UBC Law in 1985 and later received an honorary Doctor of Laws. She had a successful rowing career (1976–1988), earning multiple World Championship medals and a Commonwealth Games gold.
She went on to hold senior leadership roles in sport, including Vice-President of the International Rowing Federation, President of the Canadian Olympic Committee, and involvement with the International Olympic Committee and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Her achievements have been widely recognized with honours including the Order of Canada (later promoted to Officer), the Order of British Columbia, and induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame as a builder in rowing.
