Description

JML is one of British Columbia’s leading boutique law firms in the areas of construction litigation and family law. We are a firm where experience meets innovation. We currently have an LAA position open on our construction law team. We are searching for an individual who is excited to begin their career in a collaborative and supportive environment with award-winning lawyers.

Our construction support team is structured a little differently. Rather than the traditional two-lawyers-to-one-LAA pairing, our construction LAAs work out of the Shared Resource Centre (SRC). The SRC is a centralized hub that provides administrative, legal support, and document production services to our construction lawyers, with a focus on efficiency and consistent, high-quality work. This team works out of a shared office space with a coach who supports workflow and training.

We are looking for an individual who values teamwork, who is highly motivated with a growth mindset.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Assist lawyers with the preparation of legal documents at all stages of litigation, including preparation of binders, lists of documents, notices of application, and pleadings.
  • Preparation of materials for administrative hearings.
  • Filing court documents via BC Registries, agent, and in-person.
  • Arranging for service of court documents.
  • Schedule trials, discoveries, meetings and conferences, and confirm dates with all parties.
  • Arranging court reporters.
  • Tracking deadlines to ensure compliance with court limitations.
  • Conducting and reviewing BC Online, LTSA and corporate searches.
  • Respond to client enquiries, and handle routine administrative tasks, including opening and maintaining files, conflict searches, calendars and bring-forward management, and routine correspondence.
  • Support lawyers with monthly invoices, AR follow-up, and electronic file organization.
  • Provide reception support, including greeting clients, arranging couriers, and answering client calls.

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

  • Completion of a post-secondary LAA program or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of legal industry ‘best practice’ and foundational concepts such as confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of civil procedure from a common law jurisdiction, including understanding of court rules and filing deadlines, with a proven ability to apply legal research and comprehension skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Proven ability to learn and adopt new technologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong grammar, spelling and proofreading.

What you bring to the role:

  • A team-oriented attitude where your instinct is to help and support others because that is best for the team, the firm and our clients.
  • A commitment to high-quality work and providing outstanding service to our clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Exceptional time management, organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and resourcefulness in solving problems.
  • Comfort with technology and the ability to learn new systems quickly.

Salary and benefits:

We offer comprehensive group benefits and other perks within a fun and friendly environment. The salary range for this position is $53,000 - $62,000, which represents fair market value. Actual salary will depend on various factors, including job-related experience, internal and market equity. Our benefits package includes:

  • Extended health, vision and dental coverage with monthly premiums paid 100% by the firm for single or family coverage.
  • Life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance with monthly premiums paid 100% by the firm.
  • Long-term disability insurance.
  • Short-term disability top-up program.
  • Group RRSP plan with matched contributions.
  • Annual health and wellness allowance.
  • Employee and family assistance program.
  • Parental leave top-up program.
  • Vacation, paid sick and family responsibility leave.
  • Paid or banked overtime.

We also offer:

  • Professional development and education reimbursement.
  • Home office reimbursement to support flexible work arrangements.
  • Recognition of service milestones.
  • Regular firm social events.
  • Modern office with a staff lounge.

Please note that any offer of employment will be conditional upon background and reference checks, including employment and educational verifications.
