Blakes is currently recruiting for an experienced Accounting Manager to join our Finance Department. Reporting to the Director, Administration, this role requires a candidate who will provide professional, efficient and prompt service to our lawyers and clients.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise and manage workload of 5 accounting staff, who are responsible for monthly billings, accounts payable, cash deposits and internal audit requests
  • Maintain and process an accurate accounting of all trust funds held by the Firm and in accordance with the Law Society of BC’s regulations
  • Prepare and maintain annual operating and capital budgets for the Vancouver office, which includes financial analyses, variance reporting, etc.
  • Maintain day-to-day relations with the banks, prepare local and international wires, resolve banking issues, etc.
  • Provide strategic financial advice to the Office Managing Partner and senior management
  • Attend to all financial enquiries from clients, lawyers and staff
  • Prepare various reports and statistical information requested by lawyers (ie. aged accounts receivable, time reports, work in progress, etc.)
  • Prepare journal entries and monthly bank reconciliations
  • Prepare annual reports for CDIC and Trust; provide annual stats for economic surveys
  • Attend to internal and external audits
  • Work in cooperation with other offices on national initiatives
  • Regularly interact with national Finance Department

Qualifications:

  • Accounting degree
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of related accounting experience, preferably in a professional services industry
  • Experience with trust accounting and knowledge of Law Society of BC rules a definite asset
  • Strong leadership, communication, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to make sound judgement and can use accounting principles to guide decision making
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, CMS accounting software, Aderant budgeting software)
  • Good people skills and ability to work effectively within a team
  • Detail oriented; excellent organization skills with ability to juggle multiple priorities

Anticipated hiring range for this role: $100,000 - $120,000
