WHO WE ARE

Hamilton Duncan is the Fraser Valley’s pre-eminent law firm, boasting a team of more than 35 talented lawyers and 70 excellent support staff. Located in Surrey – one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada – we provide high-end legal services to a wide variety of clients in an assortment of engaging and challenging matters across diverse areas of practice.

We pride ourselves on a commitment to our community and our collegial workplace. We want people who value a culture and management style that fosters collaboration and respect while rewarding individual responsibility, initiative and creativity and providing opportunities for further development.

WHO WE NEED

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Human Resources Manager or Human Resources Generalist supports our management team in the day to day human resources functions of the firm. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and has knowledge of recruitment and selection, retention, performance evaluation, and various other aspects of HR. You will provide advice and guidance on HR related matters to the personnel of the firm and you will liaise with practice group leaders to effectively manage all staff. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced HR professional to work in a challenging and collaborative environment.

WHY YOU’LL WANT TO WORK WITH US

We ask a lot of our people, so we try to give a lot in return. In addition to a competitive salary, we think you’ll love these other benefits of working at Hamilton Duncan:

  • Health and wellness: Take care of yourself and your family with our comprehensive benefits plan that includes extended medical, dental, vision, critical illness and life insurance coverages, as well as an employee assistance program for those trying times. Sick leave days ensure that you don’t choose between your health and your income.
  • Location: Get to work quickly thanks to our highly accessible office location (directly adjacent to the Gateway SkyTrain station).
  • Additional comforts: Enjoy coming to work in jeans every Friday, leaving an hour early before long weekends and all summer weekends, and socializing with your colleagues at our regular social functions (health guidelines permitting).

WHO YOU ARE

To be considered for this role, your application should demonstrate the following:

  • Experience: At least three years’ experience in a human resources role with comparable responsibilities. Experience in a professional services firm would be considered an asset.
  • Education: A human resources diploma or degree from an accredited post-secondary institution. A CPHR designation is preferred but not required.
  • Skills: A good working knowledge of the Employment Standards Act and the Human Rights Code; strong problem solving and decision-making abilities; the ability to prioritize and adapt to a dynamic work environment; superior communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to handle work of high importance (sometimes on tight deadlines); and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. A working knowledge of ADP Workforce Now would be a benefit.
  • Characteristics: This is a position of significant responsibility, so you should be self-motivated, highly organized, detail oriented and thrive on solving problems both independently and with the team. The role is demanding, meaning that you need to be calm under pressure and eager to take on challenges. You will be the point person for personnel issues, so you should embrace the opportunity to communicate with others and resolve conflicts. You will handle sensitive information regularly, so you should be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

You will be an integral part of our management team, critical to the collaborative and collegial culture of the firm. In addition to other duties as may be assigned by the Chief Operating Officer, you will be responsible for:

  • Supervision: Oversight of the firm’s support staff; implementation and enforcement of staff policies; conducting staff performance reviews; reviewing staffing assignments and reallocating staff as required; participation in the management of disability and return to work issues.
  • Recruitment and Onboarding: Preparing job descriptions and advertisements for new staff and lawyers; screening and conducting interviews of support staff applicants in consultation with practice group leaders; preparation of employment offers; onboarding of new personnel; enrolling employees in firm benefit programs; arranging new employee training; working with the firm’s student committee to recruit articled students; assessing the need for and sourcing temporary staff.
  • Records: Maintaining employee files; maintaining and updating the firm’s HRIS database regarding attendance, vacation, sick leave and personal day accruals.
  • Payroll: Reviewing and approving payroll in conjunction with the Payroll Clerk.
  • Benefits Administration: Ensuring that personnel are enrolled in and familiar with the firm’s group benefits program; assisting with benefits-related issues for employees; liaising with our group benefits carrier; oversight of the firm’s self-managed benefits or programs.
  • Employee Engagement and Satisfaction: Receiving and addressing staff concerns; arranging service awards; coordinating staff gifts; spearheading the firm’s employee recognition programs; participating with the firm’s social committee in the coordination of social events; implementation of other initiatives geared at strengthening the culture and social fabric of the firm.
  • Lawyer Assistance: Registration of the firm’s lawyers in various professional organizations and at continuing education programs; liaising with the firm’s lawyers and with respect to staffing levels, staff performance, staff training and processes for improving staff efficiency.

SALARY RANGE
