The Position

Boughton Law Corporation is looking to welcome a people-focused individual as Manager of Legal Talent to our team. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Manager of Legal Talent will be responsible for leading, executing and supporting Lawyer and Student programs, including recruitment, onboarding, engagement, professional development, mentorship, and performance management process.

In this role, you will be responsible for talent management matters relating to our Lawyers and Students, as further described below.

Lateral Lawyer Recruitment

  • Manage all aspects of lateral Lawyer recruitment initiatives, including implementing and directing the recruitment strategy and process, communicating with recruiters and candidates, scheduling interviews, conducting interview, preparing business cases, onboarding and orientation.

Lawyer Management and Professional Development

  • Manage legal talent issues relating to Lawyers, and support the day-to-day development, growth, Firm programming, formal and informal mentorship, engagement, professional connectivity, and social interaction of our Lawyers and team members.
  • Implement professional development and training initiatives for Lawyers, and assist in goal setting in accordance with the Firm's performance evaluation process.
  • Support and coach Lawyers in their pursuit of career progression and achievement of their professional goals.
  • Innovate, direct and oversee a robust mentorship program that assists all team members in achieving their professional goals while still maintaining the pursuit of their personal passions and interests.

Performance Management

  • Manage and administer professional performance review and compensation review processes, including supporting continuous feedback, mentorship and career progression initiatives.

Student Programs

  • Lead the Articling and Summer Student recruitment processes, including organizing and representing the Firm at various events and law schools groups, and managing the interview process, onboarding process, and hire-back process.
  • Manage Student Program matters, principal appointment, development, training, mentorship program, and performance review process, including making recommendations to the Board of Directors on hires.
  • Liaise with Law Schools regarding student recruitment, sponsorship, events, and awards.
  • Liaise with the Law Society as necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory and reporting requirements for Students and Principals.

Special Projects and General Talent Matters

  • In collaboration with the HR Manager, assist with Legal Talent HR-related tasks, as necessary; and
  • Perform special projects and other duties, as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a lawyer.
  • Demonstrated relevant interest and experience in talent management, leadership and coaching.
  • Proven ability to lead and define direction for new or revised programs, processes, policies, standards and operational plans based upon the Firm’s long term strategies.
  • Familiar with employment related laws and statutes.
  • Proven success in navigating Legal Professionals' issues with solutions that meet the needs of the firm and the parties involved.
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to demonstrate discretion in handling highly confidential and sensitive information.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the organization/firm.
  • Excellent writing skills and proven ability to develop clear and concise communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to have a positive impact on internal business results.
  • Team-player with excellent interpersonal skills.
