The Manager of Associate and Student Programs will support the National Director of Lawyer & Student Development, whose mandate is to provide first-class talent management, career development, and recruitment programs for our non-partner lawyers and law students.  The Manager will work closely alongside the Director to oversee the Student Program and to provide coordination of CPD programs under the Professional Development mandate. The focus will be on administering internal continuing legal educations sessions, assisting with evaluation programs for our lawyers and students and as a reliable leader during the recruitment period for Articled and Summer Students. 

This position may be located in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, or Toronto and requires occasional travel to our Canadian offices and Universities across Canada.

Responsibilities and Duties

Student Development

  • Working closely with the Director, take an active role in recruitment and professional development of both Summer Students and Articled Students;
  • Arrange and coordinate interview schedules in the fall, including coordinating travel and lodging arrangements as required;
  • Oversee the student recruitment process by tracking applicants in an applicant tracking system, setting up and attending interviews and putting together materials as needed;
  • Oversee the onboarding, orientation, and mentoring of Summer and Articled Students;
  • Coordinate admission applications to the Law Society for Articled and Summer Students and mid-term reporting and applications for call (Articled Students);
  • Maintain student program information on the firm intranet and external website;
  • Organize student seminars (Articled and Summer Students) with assistance from the Director, and
  • Provide ongoing support to the Director, students and other stakeholders.

Junior Associate Development

  • Coordinate in-house professional development seminars and lunches, often organized simultaneously in multiple offices online or run in conjunction with other offices;
  • Work with Director of Lawyer & Student Development to communicate with presenters regarding seminar materials and client attendance;
  • Liaise with IT, Reception and Catering staff firm-wide to ensure timely setup of boardrooms, equipment and catering;
  • Assist with the ongoing and new accreditation of professional development seminars - Ontario, and as needed - in other offices;
  • Draft confirmation of attendance documents where required (Quebec);
  • Oversee the accuracy of professional development documents in conjunction with the Director of Lawyer & Student Development, such as the website, associate orientation manual, Articled student manual, reporting partner materials etc.;
  • Assist in numerous facets in running the annual performance evaluation process, and
  • Generally support the Director of Lawyer and Student Development, and act as trusted advisor in professional development.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Canadian Law Degree with at least 2 years of experience in a large law firm, or experience in a similar role;
  • HR experience and or education in business/commerce or in HR/organizational design;
  • Experience in recruitment and the management design and implementation of HR and Professional Development programs for developing designated professionals;
  • Exceptional communication, management, leadership;
  • Advanced technical and PC skills and an orientation to use technology to create streamlined and efficient workflows;
  • Able to handle highly confidential information in a professional and discreet manner;
  • Very strong customer service orientation and ability to build trust of a sophisticated and professional client group;
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail;
  • Proactive and follows up as needed, and
  • Ability to multitask, establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives under minimal supervision
