To support our growing operations, we are seeking a skilled and experienced Paralegal to join our Wills & Estates Department. The ideal candidate will display professionalism, empathy, initiative, and attention to detail.
In the solicitor side of our practice, our clients are typically the executors or trustees of estates / trusts. We also act on occasion for beneficiaries of estates, or applicants for Committeeship Orders.
Our Estate Paralegals are self-starters who excel at client management, information management, organization, progressing a file, and working independently to carry out the directions of the supervising lawyer.
You will become part of a well-established and highly successful practice group, working alongside a team of over 10 staff members and 5 specialized lawyers in this field of law. We provide a collaborative, team-oriented environment where you can gain valuable on-the-job experience and deepen your knowledge of this area of law. Prior Wills and Estates experience is not required but is considered an asset.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supporting a team of lawyers practicing wills, estate, trust, and probate law
Communicate with clients and provide clear advice and guidance, including advising them of their duties and responsibilities, helping them succeed in their role as executor or trustee.
Regular duties include:
Responsible for the progression of the file – determining, diarizing and initiating the next steps
Keeping the responsible lawyer informed of file/client developments
Communicating with clients, third parties (such as banks), to obtain / provide information
Due diligence searches
Reviewing and proofreading legal documents to ensure accuracy and consistency
Drafting probate documents
Preparing executor “Accounts”: obtain and review financial information / statements; reconcile transactions and prepare itemized Accounts for provision to beneficiaries to assist the executor/trustee in fulfilling their legal obligations
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 5 years of experience as a paralegal in a client facing / focused area of law. Experience in Wills & Estates is considered an asset.
Paralegal diploma
Knowledge of the Wills, Estates, and Probate processes in British Columbia is an asset
Familiarity with BC Court procedures and filing requirements
Ability to read, understand, and apply complex legislation and Rules of Court
Quick learner, self starter – ability to adapt and learn a new area of law, starting from the basics
Excellent communications skills – ability to tailor your communications to meet the needs of the client
Exceptional organizational and time management skills
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team
Detail-oriented, proactive, and client-focused approach to work
Proficient with legal software, billing software, and Microsoft Office applications

Competitive Compensation: the salary range for this role is $55,000 – $95,000 per annum. Within this range, individual pay is determined by market rates, job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training, and an internal equity review of the salaries of other employees.

HOURS OF WORK:
This position is Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. This is a 7-hour paid day, 35-hour work week.
